Smithfield Guesthouse and Button Birding Tours
Guesthouse Accommodation Midlands - Kwazulu Natal

ButtonBirding Tours and Smithfield Guesthouse situated on the outskirts of the village of Creighton on a farm called Smithfield. Previously dairy farmers for 20 years, Gail and Malcolm Gemmell slowly turned their hobby of birdwatching, cooking and entertaining into a new venture. Malcolm’s knowledge of birds and good people skills are what is needed to satisfy ‘twitchers’, both locally and internationally. He enhanced his skills by becoming an accredited bird guide through South African Tourism. Gail runs the guesthouse efficiently and is the chef-in-house. The couple have managed to balance a unique mix of hospitality, good dining, cosy country comfort and of course -–good birding.

Accommodation

Accommodation is in a comfortable "home from home" guesthouse on a dairy farm. The Homestead is a modified 1908 farm-house set in a beautiful garden in the scenic Creighton Valley. The Valley is 1000m above sea level, so frost and cold in winter are a reality, a fact that makes you very grateful for the cosy bedrooms and fire-warmed home. There are four double rooms, including two en-suite bedrooms, with shared living and dining rooms.

Self catering accommodation with views of the Umzimkulu river is also available, and limited to a maximum of 4 guests. The one-bedroomed annexe with fully equipped kitchen and open-plan lounge is wheel chair accessible.

Invariably during a visit to the guesthouse, you will be greeted by ‘Fubby the Fat Boy’, who has already wormed his way into many visitors’ hearts and cameras in his brief tenure as ‘guard dog’.
