Escape to Bushmanskloof

Main Section

Break away to the Cederberg for the ultimate luxury wilderness escape, far off the beaten track.

During this magical getaway, the breathtaking, untamed landscape of Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat, will set the scene for master military historian and story teller Rob Caskie to bring vividly to life the dramatic events around the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879.

Experience the intrigue, passion and courage of two of South Africa’s greatest historical clashes through the eyes of this veteran storyteller, and be enthralled by re-enactments of the battles of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Rob Caskie is the principal lecturer at Fugitives’ Drift Lodge in Kwazulu-Natal, where these battles took place, and his illustrations of these heroic events that have shaped the course of South African history will captivate your imagination. An understudy of the late David Rattray, Caskie was intimately involved in the field research and photography required in producing David Rattray’s book, ‘A Soldier Artist in Zululand’.

During this interactive weekend you will also discover the many facets of Bushmans Kloof, with exhilarating game drives and visits to ancient rock art sites, some dating back 10 000 years. Visit the Bushmans Kloof Heritage Centre, and en route to or from the lodge, stop at Louis Leipoldt’s Grave on the Pakhuis Pass and visit the Englishman’s Grave on the outskirts of the reserve. Or in Clanwilliam, pay a visit to the Museum in the Old Jail with its exhibits of Louis Leipoldt and the Anglo Boer War.

Bushmans Kloof is a conservation success story and a safe haven for abundant indigenous flora and fauna. It is custodian of one of the world’s largest open-air rock art galleries, and is recognized as an SA Natural Heritage site for its immense historical and botanical significance. With a host of enriching, relaxing and well-being experiences on offer here, from educational forays to more than 130 historic Bushman rock art sites, to thrilling outdoor adventures and healing spa experiences, guests are spoiled for choice.

Rated Best Hotel in the World (Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2009), this Relais & Chateaux lodge was also included in the Condé Nast Traveler Gold List Best Hotels in Africa & the Middle East (2009); Forbes Traveler 400 Best Hotels (2008/9); and National Geographic Adventure Magazine Top 50 Eco Lodges (2008).
